Unlike a traditional front-engine kei vehicle, the engine is mounted underneath the rear seats, creating a balanced and compact chassis design. Honda called this layout UM-4 (“Under Midship 4WD”), referring to the engine placement beneath the cabin combined with the four-wheel-drive system.
This innovative chassis design gives the Honda Z an almost perfect 50/50 weight distribution, improving stability, handling, and traction while maintaining excellent interior space for such a compact vehicle. Combined with Honda’s proven 4WD system and smooth 4-speed automatic transmission, the Z delivers confident performance in a small and efficient package.
